Education:

- National School of Fine Arts, Havana City, Cuba (1965 – 1970)
- Taught at National School of Fine Arts (1970-1985)
- Was professor and head of the Painting Department of the College of Arts (ISA) and faculty member of its Engraving Department.

From his roots, Nelson Dominguez approaches the rural world with humor, delicacy and poetry. In his works, the natural and the human entwine in an atmosphere of stories and legends. From the descriptive to the symbolic, from the local color of the countryside’s contemplative life to the American myth, the plastic evolution of Nelson Dominguez is pregnant with a familiar air that can be discovered observing the revealing signs that shows his interest in men and nature throughout more than twenty years of fruitful creative activity. From the beginning of his career, experimentation has been Nelson’s basic methods of creation. He does not permit himself to consider a work in process as finished, but rather lives it intensely. Nelson selects themes and topics by reviewing sequences from his past. Customs and yearnings that shaped country life during his childhood and adolescence are references for his work. A Cuban and Caribbean painter in constant confrontation with his cultural heritage, Nelson presents a romantic view of rural life and creates an iconographic and morphologic repertoire which, being close to Lam, Tamayo or Matta’s, makes him stand out significantly among others approaching the mysterious reign of this world. Read more...
